These conversations of 1956 were spoken by the Mother in French and appear here in English translation. All of them were tape-recorded. Passages from some of the talks were published in the French original with an English translation in issues of the Bulletin of Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education from 1956 to 1963. Between March 1970 and August 1974 a new translation of all the talks was serialised in the monthly journal Mother India. This translation was brought out as a book in 1973 under the title Questions and Answers 1956. The same book, with minor revisions of the translation, was published in 1978 as Volume 8 of the Collected Works of the Mother (first edition). The present volume has the same text as the first edition, apart from some minor revisions of the translation.
